Disabling the configuration option for automatic email forwarding
With IdM Selfservice [1], you can configure incoming emails to an RWTH email account to be forwarded to external email addresses.
However, this configuration option will be deactivated for existing mailboxes on November 13, 2025. Mailboxes for which forwarding has already been configured will display the destination email address and will only offer the option to delete the forwarding. Existing redirects are not affected by this.
To continue configuring email forwarding to another account, create a corresponding inbox rule [2].
During deployment of the new self-service version, RWTH self-service will be unavailable. This outage will last a maximum of five minutes.

Maintenance MySQL Database Server (MFA)
During the specified period maintenance work will be carried out on the IT Center's MFA MySQL databases. The databases will be unavailable for a total of approximately 15 minutes during this maintenance and new logins to services with RWTH Single Sign-On will not be possible. Existing sessions will remain intact.
System overload due to semester change
The transfer of large amounts of data at the end of the semester is currently putting a strain on the system. This may result in the following effects:
- Delayed response times when using Selfservice, ConnectMe, and PasswordReset
- Delay in creating Tokens for Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- Delays when creating new accounts and updating personal data, especially when redeeming ConnectMe coupons
- Delays in assigning permissions and roles
Changes made and data will not be lost, but may be processed more slowly and displayed correctly at a later stage.
Please be patient and refer to our current status messages for new information.

Teilstörung beim Einlösen von ConnectMe-Coupons
Due to synchronization failures, there are currently difficulties redeeming ConnectMe coupons (“Coupon is not yet known to the system”). At present, this only affects employees of RWTH Aachen University.
We are already working on a solution.
Data Protection Incident on 11.8.2025
Due to an unintentional configuration error, a data protection incident occurred on Monday, 11 August 2025, between 11:36 and 11:58 a.m. (or, in the context of RWTHmoodle, until approximately 12:40 p.m.):
Logged-in users may have been able to view the data of other logged-in users.
The following services are affected (analysis is ongoing):
- RWTHmoodle
- Git-Ce
- RWTHgpt
- Sciebo (only data in MySciebo)
- GigaMove
Affected persons will be informed separately by email.

This also affects dependent services of the IT Center that use these MySQL databases, i.e. multi-factor authentication (MFA) and Icinga
Due to the great importance of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for the work processes at RWTH, the work on the MFA-related databases is carried out directly at the start of maintenance. Accordingly, MFA will not be available between 7:00 and probably 7:20 am. During this period, new logins to services with RWTH Single Sign-On are not possible. Existing sessions will be preserved.
Login via RWTH Single Sign-On not working
There are currently disruptions to RWTH Single Sign-On. After entering your login details, the screen loads and then an Internal Server Error appears. This affects all services that use the RWTH Single Sign-On login.
The specialist department has been informed and is working to resolve the issue.

Routing über neue XWiN-Router
During this period, the routing of the previous XWiN routers (Nexus 7700) will be switched to the new XWiN routers (Catalyst 9600). These routers are essential for RWTH's network connection. This changeover also requires the migration of the DFN connection, which is switched redundantly to Frankfurt and Hannover, and the RWTH firewall to the new systems.
There will be complete or partial outages of the external connection during the maintenance window. All RWTH services (e.g. VPN, email, RWTHonline, RWTHmoodle) will not be available during this period. The accessibility of services within the RWTH network will be temporarily unavailable due to limited DNS functionality.

In der angegebenen Zeit findet ein Update unseres MFA-Backends statt. Während dieser Zeit können neue RWTH Single Sign-On Sitzungen mit MFA nicht gestartet werden. Weiterhin sind neue VPN-Sessions nicht möglich. Bestehende Sitzungen (SSO & VPN) bleiben unbeeinträchtigt aktiv.
Aufgrund von fehlenden Policies konnten nicht alle Token gefunden werden und es kam zu Problem bei der Anmeldung.

Data synchronization disrupted
Automatic data synchronization in the Identity Management did not take place during this period.
The problem has been resolved and regular data synchronization is running again.
Changes made during this period are currently being processed by the system and have not been lost.
Some of the systems are only synchronized at night, which means that this data will not be up to date again until tomorrow.
The following was particularly affected:
- Synchronization of new coupons
- Creation of new accounts
- Updating of accounts, especially with new roles and rights
- Transfer of new data from the IdM to other systems
- Transfer of new status information, such as employee or student
Short interruptions due to semester change
During this period, there were repeated brief system failures due to high system loads, as a result of which various data could not be displayed or saved. This could lead to error messages in some applications.

This evening around 20:25 - 21:00 there was a performance low in the SSO service and was checked by the specialist department during this time. The problem has been solved and fast logins without waiting times are possible again.

Java Update: IdM Startseite, MessageTemplateEditor & ReRoWebGUI
The IdM HomePage, MessageTemplateEditor & Rollen- und Gruppenverwaltung are going to be deployed with a new Java version on Wednesday, 16. Oct. 2024, between about 3:10 pm and 4:00 pm. These applications may temporarily not be available during deployment.
Short problems while using RWTH Single Sign-On
For a short period of time, there was an error while using RWTH Single Sign-On.
The problem has been solved.
Error during password change
An error may occur when changing passwords via the IdM Selfservice or via the PasswordReset application:
Internal Server Error
However, the passwords will still be changed.
Please try logging in with the newly set password. If the login is not successful, please try to change the password again in 15-30 minutes.
Revocation of CMS
CMS group memberships are currently being withdrawn despite a valid status in IDM.
We are working on a solution and on restoring the data.
Partner-Manager automatische Couponpflege gestört
There is currently a problem with the automatic management of coupons in the Partner Manager.
The automated deletion process of coupons is disrupted and no information emails are sent out.
This means that partners with expired coupons will still have all associated permissions and will need to have them revoked manually.
Umstellung Rollencoupons auf ConnectMe
From September 26th coupons will only be redeemable in ConnectMe. The previous redemption in the Selfservice no longer applies and the page there redirects to ConnectMe.
PictureManager not available
Due to a malfunction of PictureManager, there may be problems uploading the picture for BlueCard in IdM Selfservice.
We are working on fixing the problem.
Expired certificate
Due to the expired certificate for idm.rwth-aachen.de, no IdM applications and the applications that use RWTH Single Sign-On can be accessed.
We are working on a solution.
- An insecure connection message is displayed when calling up IdM applications.
- When calling up applications with access via RWTH Single Sign-On, a message about missing authorisations is displayed.

Hosts of RWTH Aachen University partly not accessible from networks of other providers
Due to DNS disruption, the name servers of various providers are currently not returning an IP address for hosts under *.rwth-aachen.de.
As a workaround, you can store alternative DNS servers in your connection settings, e.g. the Level3-Nameserver (4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1) or Comodo (8.26.56.26 und 8.20.247.20). It may also be possible to reach the RWTH VPN server, in which case please use VPN.

vCenter Server
Aufgrund von Erneuerung der SSL Zertifikate wird der vCenter Server im genannten Zeitraum teilweise kurzzeitig nicht erreichbar sein.
Alle VMs laufen wie gewohnt weiter und die Erreichbarkeit der darauf laufenden Dienste wird NICHT durch diese Wartung beeinträchtigt werden. Lediglich die Funktionen des HTML5 Clients für das Management ihrer VMs werden nicht verfügbar sein, da Sie sich während der Wartung nicht am vCenter Server einloggen können.
Token manager not available
Currently, you receive an internal server error when calling the token manager.

Multifactor-Authentication for the RWTH Single Sign-On
Since July 2, 2024, the RWTH Single Sign-On (SSO) and the login of all SSO-connected services is protected with multifactor-authentication (MFA). In addition to an individual password, users must now enter a second factor when logging in. The second factor must be generated in Selfservice [1] via the Token Manager. Login via RWTH Single Sign-On Partially Not Possible
Unfortunately, the login via the RWTH Single Sign-On and thus into the connected services is currently only successful in individual cases.
If you receive an error message, please try to log in again in about an hour.
People who are already successfully logged in are not affected by the disruption.
Creating the first token not possible
At the moment, it is not possible to create the first token for the persons who have not yet set up tokens.
When calling up the token manager, an error message is displayed stating that authentication has failed.

Due to a malfunction of the authentication infrastructure, the Picture Manager, the RWTHapp and the eduroam device manager are currently restricted in use.
Change Condition CMS Group Membership
The conditions of CMS group memberships will be changed. Instead of an expiration date, group memberships are now linked to an active status in Identity Management.

Störung Selfservice
Due to a malfunction, the selfservice is currently only available to a limited extent. We are already working on a solution.
Wartung IdM System
During this period, the system undergoes regular maintenance. From the user's perspective, the following short-term effects may occur temporarily during the maintenance period:
- Limited functionality and availability of SelfService, ConnectMe and PasswordReset
- Delays when creating new accounts and updating personal data
- Delays in the assignment of authorizations and roles
- Interference with new Shibboleth logins
- Limited functionality and availability of RWTHcontacts, RWTH directory of people, RWTH directory of organizations, and UKAcontacts
If a login via Shibboleth (RWTH Single Sign-On) fails during maintenance, we ask users to repeat the login attempt. Existing Shibboleth sessions are not affected by the maintenance.

Currently the data synchronization for exports and displayed data on RWTHcontacts is not running. That data is therefore no longer up to date. The fault is expected to be rectified during the course of the day.

There may currently be problems after redeeming role coupons in Selfservice.
In some cases, the synchronization triggered after role coupon redemption is currently out of order. Systems which consume data from coupon redemption couldn't receive it eventually.
It could happen that i.e. entitlements don't arrive SAP even though selfservice lists the entitling role as successfully redeemed.
Recently, a fix for new coupons was deployed while the problem still persists for coupons already redeemed and their roles. We are working on a solution for those persons who are still affected. If you belong to that group, you don't have to do anything since the solution will apply automatically.

The Identity Management System is currently overloaded due to changes resulting from the change of semester.
As a result, data queries take longer or may fail. This manifests itself in long loading times or error pages or changes lost in the background. This results in the following disturbances:
- Disturbance of the use and accessibility of SelfService, ConnectMe, PasswordReset and Gruppenverwaltung
- Delays when creating new accounts and updating personal data
- Delays in the assignment of authorisations and roles
- Disturbance of new Shibboleth logins
In some cases, there may be delays in obtaining a status, such as employee or student.
It is not possible to give a reliable prognosis on the duration of the problem, so please continue to be patient.
If you still have problems redeeming coupon codes after the malfunction has been fixed, please send an e-mail with the coupon code to servicedesk@itc.rwth-aachen.de.
In the case of role coupons, the role administratior can alternatively issue a new coupon code for you.
