We are aware that GitLab is currently experiencing significant performance issues. We have analyzed these issues and are working to resolve them as soon as possible.

As part of the rollout of a central GitLab instance for all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, the git.rwth-aachen.de service will be migrated to git.nrw.

The transition started on June 2, 2026, and will continue until July 1, 2027.

The transition is currently in its first phase, the migration phase:
git.rwth-aachen.de will remain available for regular use until January 4, 2027.
Project managers should begin migrating their data to git.nrw or an alternative GitLab instance. Starting the migration early is recommended to ensure the availability of the projects. Project managers are responsible for migrating their projects themselves!

Please note that the current migration may result in increased system load, which may occasionally cause performance to be slightly slower. We are continuously working on optimizations to improve stability and minimize any potential limitations.

During the specified maintenance window, the IT Center will perform maintenance on the MySQL databases used by the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) service. As part of the maintenance, the databases will be unavailable for a total of approximately 15 minutes.

During this time, new logins to services using RWTH Single Sign-On will not be possible. Existing sessions will remain active and will not be affected by the maintenance.

Due to maintenance at 20.08.2026 from 14:30 to 15:30, git.rwth-aachen.de & git-ce.rwth-aachen.de will be temporarily unavailable.

Due to severe security patches git.rwth-aachen.de & git-ce.rwth-aachen.de must be upgraded. This will happen on August 18 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. GitLab will temporarilly unavailable.

Maintenance has been completed.

GitLab will be restarted due to a configuration change. The downtime will last from a few seconds to a maximum of 5 minutes.

Aufgrund der Performance Probleme in den letzten Wochen, begründet durch die Migration, sowie massive Zugriffe durch KI Crawler auf öffentliche Projekte in git.rwth-aachen.de wird ein Reverse-Proxy-Filter (Anubis https://github.com/techaroHQ/anubis) vor GitLab geschaltet. Die Umstellung erfolgt am 13.08.26.

Die Wartung verlängert sich um ca. 2 Stunden.

Due to maintenance work on the storage system (Ceph Storage), the following applications will experience disruptions during the maintenance window:

• RWTHonline: Documents cannot be uploaded or downloaded in the “Submission of Final Theses” application. You should also complete any file uploads before the maintenance window begins to avoid errors.
• RWTHmoodle: Playing and editing existing videos, as well as uploading new videos, will not be possible. This only affects videos made available via the “Opencast” streaming application.
• Lecture Hall Streaming: Streaming videos from the lecture halls will not be possible.
• GitLab: Uploads (and downloads) of user files and images, CI/CD pipelines, artifacts and registries, and LFS will not be available. Backups will also not be possible.
• Linux Installation Server: The provision of Linux RPM packages and Kickstart files will be affected during the maintenance period.
• GigaMove: Uploading and downloading files will not be possible.

Die Wartung ist nun erfolgreich abgeschlossen.

Due to performance issues in recent weeks caused by the migration, as well as massive traffic from AI crawlers targeting public projects on git.rwth-aachen.de, a reverse proxy filter (Anubis https://github.com/techaroHQ/anubis) will be deployed in front of GitLab. The change will be implemented in the coming days; an exact date will be announced.
