Cause of the Malfunction Still Not Resolved
Even though most of the services are up and running again, the root cause of the problem has not been resolved. We are continuing to work behind the scenes to fix the issue. However, this also means that disruptions may still occur.

Outage Affecting Most Services
To resolve the current issues, maintenance work will be performed today between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. During this time, there will be a service interruption affecting most of the services at RWTH for approximately 10 minutes. Please take this last-minute announcement into account when planning your work.

RWTH Single Sign-On Disrupted
Login via RWTH Single Sign-On (SSO) is currently disrupted. As a result, it is not possible to log in to any connected services.
There is currently a widespread disruption affecting, among other things, the SSO, though not limited to it. The root cause analysis is still underway.
Most of the services are currently up and running again. The analysis is ongoing. We cannot rule out the possibility of further outages.

Explanation Following the Outage:
On June 22, 2026, starting at 9:00 a.m., there was a widespread outage affecting our services, which primarily impacted the RWTH Single Sign-On but was not limited to it. By around 12:00 p.m., the situation had largely stabilized, allowing users to log in via RWTH Single Sign-On again; however, other issues (e.g., with the IT Center ticket tool and RWTHmoodle) persisted. On the same day, between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the data center firewall was rebooted, which resolved the remaining issues. The disruption was caused by problems with the data center core switch. To ensure a lasting improvement in the situation, maintenance on the affected system was successfully carried out on June 30, 2026.
RWTH Single Sign-On Disrupted
There may currently be issues logging in via RWTH Single Sign-On (SSO).
This is because a new certificate has been active in the metadata since 9:30 a.m. today.
The relevant department has been notified and is working with the system operators to resolve the issue.
Network migration of the local server infrastructure for Microsoft services
During the period Wednesday, May 27 2026, from 11:00 to approximately 12:00 CEST, the servers responsible for authentication and licensing of Microsoft services at RWTH Aachen will be migrated to a new network. During this maintenance window, logging in to Microsoft products via Single Sign‑On (SSO) will not be possible. Accounts that are already logged in should not experience any restrictions.
The services directly affected are:
- Login to the M365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint) via egal@m365.rwth-aachen.de or egal@students.rwth-aachen.de
- Azure Dev Tools for Teaching via egal@students.rwth-aachen.de
- Login to Microsoft Azure via egal@azure.rwth-aachen.de
Note for affected users:
Please plan your work with the listed services so that no new logins are required during the specified time window.

Die weitere Nutzung von Microsoft Teams und M365 ist weiterhin in Klärung.Sobald es eine Entscheidung gibt, werden die Nutzenden entsprechend informiert.
Aufgrund von Verzögerungen bei den Vertragsverhandlungen zum Microsoft Bundesvertrag wird die weitere Nutzung an der RWTH derzeit noch geklärt.
Die Nutzung von Teams ist für Mitarbeitende weiterhin in Klärung. Sobald es eine Entscheidung gibt, werden die Nutzenden entsprechenden informiert.
M365 und Microsoft Teams sind unter den bisherigen Rahmenbedingungen bis zum Ende des MS Bundesvertrages 4.0 nutzbar.

Aktualisierung der Zertifikate und Metadaten auf den Systemen der Cloud-Infrastruktur
Die Zertifikate auf unseren Authentifizierungs-Servern für die Anmeldung mit den @m365, @students und @azure-Microsoft Konten werden aktualisiert. Im Anschluss werden auf den Shibboleth-Servern die Metadaten aktualisiert.
Wir gehen nicht von einer Einschränkung beim Login aus.

Login via RWTH Single Sign-On not working
There are currently disruptions to RWTH Single Sign-On. After entering your login details, the screen loads and then an Internal Server Error appears. This affects all services that use the RWTH Single Sign-On login.
The specialist department has been informed and is working to resolve the issue.

Routing über neue XWiN-Router
During this period, the routing of the previous XWiN routers (Nexus 7700) will be switched to the new XWiN routers (Catalyst 9600). These routers are essential for RWTH's network connection. This changeover also requires the migration of the DFN connection, which is switched redundantly to Frankfurt and Hannover, and the RWTH firewall to the new systems.
There will be complete or partial outages of the external connection during the maintenance window. All RWTH services (e.g. VPN, email, RWTHonline, RWTHmoodle) will not be available during this period. The accessibility of services within the RWTH network will be temporarily unavailable due to limited DNS functionality.

Meldung „Ihre Schullizenz wird bald deaktiviert“
As the MS federal contract expires on May 1, 2025 and the licenses will be switched to the new MS federal contract, it is possible that the error message “Your school license will soon be deactivated” will appear after registration. This has no influence on the further use of the M365 products. Nothing further needs to be done here.
Kurze SSO-Störung
This evening around 20:25 - 21:00 there was a performance low in the SSO service and was checked by the specialist department during this time. The problem has been solved and fast logins without waiting times are possible again.
Single sign-on and MFA mailfunction
At the moment, single sign-on and multi-factor authentication are sporadically disrupted. We are already working on a solution and ask for your patience.
Interruption of the Login via RWTH Single Sign-On
Due to database maintenance, login to applications protected by RWTH Single Sign-On (e.g. RWTHonline, RWTHmoodle, Selfservice, SAP) will not be possible for a short time during the specified period.
Please log in to the application in which you would like to work during this period before the maintenance.
We assume that the interruption of the login will last about five minutes.
Short problems while using RWTH Single Sign-On
For a short period of time, there was an error while using RWTH Single Sign-On.

Expired certificate
Due to the expired certificate for idm.rwth-aachen.de, no IdM applications and the applications that use RWTH Single Sign-On can be accessed.
We are working on a solution.
- An insecure connection message is displayed when calling up IdM applications.
- When calling up applications with access via RWTH Single Sign-On, a message about missing authorisations is displayed.
The certificate has been updated and the applications can be accessed again. Please delete the browser cache before accessing the pages again.
Aktualisierung der Metadaten auf den Systemen der Cloud-Infrastruktur
Es werden heute zwischen 10:15-10:30 Uhr die Metadaten der Cloud-Infrastruktur aktualisiert. In dieser Zeit kann es zu Ausfällen beim Login zu den Microsoft-Diensten kommen.

The procurement of the storage expansion packages is currently still in progress and we cannot guarantee that the storage in the tenant will be released on 01.08.2024.
If the packages have not been booked into the tenant by 01.08.2024, the tenant and all OneDrive and SharePoint Online sites will be set to “read-only” mode.
This means that no new data can be uploaded or existing data edited until implementation. No data will be lost. Data can still be accessed and downloaded so that work can continue locally if required.
As soon as the conversion is complete, the services will be available again as usual.
This status message will be updated continuously.
As of 31.07.2024, 14:30: The extension packages were imported into the tenant this morning and we are now waiting for them to be synchronized with all Microsoft services. We assume that the synchronization will be completed by 02.08.2024 at the latest.
There is no way for us to speed up this process.
vCenter Server
Aufgrund von Erneuerung der SSL Zertifikate wird der vCenter Server im genannten Zeitraum teilweise kurzzeitig nicht erreichbar sein.
Alle VMs laufen wie gewohnt weiter und die Erreichbarkeit der darauf laufenden Dienste wird NICHT durch diese Wartung beeinträchtigt werden. Lediglich die Funktionen des HTML5 Clients für das Management ihrer VMs werden nicht verfügbar sein, da Sie sich während der Wartung nicht am vCenter Server einloggen können.
Während der Wartung ist es zu Fehlern gekommen, sodass die Wartung verlängert werden muss.
